Q: What is Ready Set Trot?
A: Ready Set Trot is a series of introductory programs that introduce young people to the world of horses, teaching them fundamental horse skills and horse awareness within a safe and fun setting. At the same time the program also focuses on instilling core values such as responsibility, communication, respect, empathy and team work.
Q: What are the Ready Set Trot programs?
A: Ready Set Trot consists of two sub-programs that allow for flexible delivery to reach all young Australians – the Ready Set Trot Stable Skills program is a beginner’s learn-to-ride program and the Ready Set Trot Playground Skills program offers active-play games and activity sheets that can be delivered without needing an actual horse.
Q: Who developed Ready Set Trot?
A: Ready Set Trot, which was first launched to Australian children in March 2013, is a joint initiative of Equestrian Australia, Pony Club Australia and the Australian Sports Commission, and is supported by Riding for the Disabled Association of Australia and Standardbreds Unharnessed.
Q: Who is Ready Set Trot targeted at?
A: Ready Set Trot is targeted toward junior horse lovers and beginner riders – regardless if you have access to a horse or not.
Q: What opportunities are there for young people when they finish Ready Set Trot?
A: Ready Set Trot is a beginner horse riding and horse education program, and upon completion participants will be equipped with the skills to attend their first competition or join an equestrian/pony club.
Q: What is Ready Set Trot Stable Skills?
A: Stable Skills is a program designed to introduce children to the basics of horse riding, whilst teaching the fundamentals of horsemanship and overall horse welfare. This outcome-based program is made up of four Ribbon Levels (Green, Yellow, Red and Blue), and has been designed to allow each participant to work through at his/her own desired pace. Each level is met with new activities, lesson plans and learning curves to further a young person’s horse knowledge and riding skills.
Q: What is involved in Ready Set Trot Stable Skills?
A: Participants register with Stable Skills at the Green level and work through skills and activities with each lesson, progressing through the four levels. Skills include both mounted and unmounted activities that participants can work through at their own pace and are also accompanied by theory activities which come as part of the participant pack.
Q: What does the Ready Set Trot Stable Skills program cost?
A: Participant registration and packs are charged at the below fees with additional coaching lesson fees paid directly to your accredited coach. You may also purchase your participant pack directly from an accredited coach who may choose to offer Ready Set Trot packages which include the cost of lessons, registration and packs, either as one fee or in instalments. Prices include GST & postage.

Q: How can children register for Ready Set Trot Stable Skills?
A: There are many ways that a young person can register for Ready Set Trot:
- Via this website – Participants can sign up here to register for one level at a time, i.e. the green ribbon level is a prerequisite of the Yellow ribbon level and so on, through to the Blue Ribbon Level. Once Participants have registered and received their pack, they can find an accredited coach/Delivery Provider to work through the content at their own pace.
- Directly with a coach or Delivery Provider – Some Delivery Providers and coaches may choose to offer Ready Set Trot packages which include the cost of lessons, registration and packs, either as one fee or in instalments, so Participants can also sign up directly with a registered Delivery Provider/coach.
Q: What do Ready Set Trot Stable Skills Participants receive?
A: Once registered, Participants receive the pack corresponding to that level – the Green pack includes an A5 folder, activity sheets, sticker, wristband, pen and a Ready Set Trot helmet cover. Other level packs include a ribbon from the level before, a corresponding colour wristband, and more activity sheets to complete that level.
Q: Do Participants have to start at the Green level – what if they can already ride?
A: Yes, Participants do need to start at the Green level and work consecutively through the four levels. Ready Set Trot is a program for beginners but also focusses on learning good habits and skills, so it never hurts to go back to the basics!
Q: How do I find a coach?
A: To find a coach that is registered to deliver the Ready Set trot program, visit the ‘Find a Coach’ part of this website. Here you can search for a registered coach in your local area or direct your current coach here for them to register so they can help you complete the Ready Set Trot program.
Q: I am a past participant with Ready Set Trot, but never received my online login details?
A: All participants who have previously been involved in a Ready Set Trot Stable Skills program before 1st July 2015 are automatically supplied with new login details for the Ready Set Trot website. If you are a past participant and have not received an e-mail with new login details, please contact the Ready Set Trot team at [email protected]
Q: When I register, can I share email addresses with other members of my family?
A: Every participant of Ready Set Trot must supply a unique email address per person. Unfortunately, participants from the same family can not share one email address as each participant has their own personal profile. For past participants having trouble with their email address, contact the Ready Set Trot team at [email protected]
Q: Who can deliver Ready Set Trot?
A: Ready Set Trot can be delivered by accredited EA, PCA or RDA coaches who have registered as Ready Set Trot Delivery Providers.
Q: What do I need to deliver Ready Set Trot?
A: To deliver Ready Set Trot, you must be registered as a Ready Set Trot Delivery Provider through this website. To be registered, you must be affiliated with EA, PCA or RDA, use an accredited EA, PCA or RDA coach, hold adequate insurance and hold a valid and current WWC. You may register by visiting this page and following the instructions.
Q: How do I affiliate with EA, PCA or RDA?
A: To affiliate, please contact your State EA, PCA or RDA branch to discuss the affiliation process and appropriate fees.

Essentially, Ready Set Trot can be used by coaches and clubs as a platform to expand and add structure to their current offerings and attract new participants.
Q: How is Ready Set Trot Stable Skills delivered?
A: The Stable Skills program has been designed with delivery flexibility in mind to suit a wide variety of coaching methods. The program can be delivered to suit the Delivery Provider as models such as after school lessons, weekend lessons, School Holiday camps, intensive clinics, or come-and-try expo days. The program can be completed as part of a group or on an individual basis, using either the Participant’s own horse, or a provided schooled horse.

A: All Ready Set Trot Delivery Providers receive a comprehensive Ready Set Trot Coaching handbook, an online advertising profile, and access to a suite of marketing and promotional resources that can be used to promote their own business with the Ready Set Trot brand. Resources include online profiles, adaptable flyers, templates and guides.

A: Participants can register individually through this website and be sent their pack directly; alternatively, they can register with a Delivery Provider who has pre-purchased packs from the Ready Set Trot team.

A: Participants need to start at the Green level and work consecutively through the four levels. Ready Set Trot is a program for beginners but also focuses on learning good habits and skills so it never hurts to go back to basics! If your student’s skills are still past the level of Ready Set Trot, the next opportunities for them include:
- Joining a local club or riding school to continue practicing their horse riding skills;
- Starting to work through the EA Intro Horse Management and Intro Riding courses or the Pony Club Efficiency Certificates; and
- Talking to their local club or State Branch office about local competitions coming up in their area.

A: Ready Set Trot Playground Skills is a schools-based program that provides young people with an introduction to horses through a series of fun games and activities – without actually needing a horse! Delivery using basic sports equipment such as balls and hoops means the program can be delivered anywhere, anytime, by anyone.
Q: What is Sporting Schools?
A: Sporting Schools is a new program available to all Australian primary schools. The program offers funding for schools to engage quality coaches to deliver sport programs, including equestrian, before, during, or after school. Equestrian Australia is working with Sporting Schools to foster a lifelong interest in horse sports and promote a healthier mind and body in young, people while also encouraging fun in an active and safe environment.
Q: How do I register to deliver Sporting Schools?
A: Accredited coaches can register as a coach to deliver Ready Set Trot Playground Skills through Sporting Schools, using a quick and easy online process here. Coaches are required to hold current EA or PCA accreditations and meet State-specific Working with Children requirements.
